EBS staff have developed innovative and unique solutions to Client’s environmental and sustainability challenges, including the following “first-time” projects in Africa:

- Market Penetration Strategy to Pikitup (2003) – this was the first general waste market research and strategy in Africa;

- Development of Process Risk Assessment (i.e. Environmental Technical Review) for Scoping Phase of Industrial EIA’s, resulting in the elimination of redundant specialist studies during EIR phase and incorporation of pollution risk reduction opportunities into project design stage (various, 2002 – 2008);

- Integration of Responsible Care guidelines into integrated ISO 19001 auditing protocols (i.e. ISO 9001, 14001 and OHSAS 18001) (Omnia Group, 2005);

- Phase Zero concept for the Environmental Due Diligence process, including quantification of 3rd party liability (various, 2006 - 2008);

- Development of the first integrated Safety, Health and Environmental interactive risk assessment tool for the mining industry (AngloCoal, 2005);

- International Benchmarking of Sustainability Reports (including PPC, Sasol, BHP, De Beers, Lonmin, SA Breweries, Anglo, Goldfields, etc) (2002 & 2006)

- Use of the Life Cycle Assessment methodology (ISO 14040) to establish the preference of disposal of hazardous waste to cement kiln over landfilling (PPC Cement, 2007);

- Integration of ISO 14001 aspects registers into risk assessment methodologies to address Lenders’ Liability for Financiers (various, 2008);

- Compiling the first Sustainability Report prior to commencement of mining, and incorporating EIA specialist studies into GRI baseline data (Gem Diamonds, 2007 – 2008, current),

- Development of a Sustainability Indicator Model for Procurement for retail outlets in 23 countries (MTN, 2008), and

- Development of the first Environmental Liability Underwriting Reports in South Africa (EnviroServ, ABSA: 2008).
